Blog from January, 2018

In recent years, the zebrafish larva has become a powerful vertebrate model for neuroethology research. Its optical accessibility, a known genome and a vast library of promoters and mutants, make the zebrafish specially suitable for optogenetics and cutting-edge optical methods (e.g. light-sheet microscopy, holographics) to monitor and manipulate neuronal activity. In addition, the zebrafish has a complex although discrete repertoire of motor behaviours, making an ideal vertebrate preparation for the study of neuronal circuit dynamics underlying motor behaviour. The purpose of this meeting is to bring together researchers interested in the study of neural circuits and behaviour, and to introduce the zebrafish model to the neuroethology community which allows the use of state-of-the-art technical approaches to ask neuroethological questions and test specific hypotheses with unprecedented power and infeasible using other animal models.

IZFS News Splash

Registration is now open! The 13th International Zebrafish Conference (IZFC – renamed from “International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics” to reflect the broadening scope of zebrafish research work) returns to Madison, Wisconsin June 20-24, 2018. We welcome you back to Madison for what promises to be an extraordinarily exciting and informative conference including plenary, concurrent, workshop, and poster sessions highlighting the latest zebrafish research advances and informing participants about the newest cutting-edge fish research tools and technologies. For the last several decades this has been THE key conference for the worldwide zebrafish community, and the organizers of the 2018 meeting are working hard to ensure that the next meeting will be the best one yet. Make sure that you don’t miss out on this important meeting!
Note: In order to register for the conference and/or submit an abstract, you must sign in or create a new IZFS website profile. During profile creation you will also be given the opportunity to become an IZFS member, giving you access to discounted IZFS member conference registration rates. If you have trouble creating a profile, contact our administrator at info@izfs.org.

Letter of Invitation Required? Be sure to register soon and indicate on your online registration form that you require a letter of Invitation to attend the 2018 International Zebrafish Conference.

Abstract Submissions are now open!

You are invited to submit abstracts containing new and unpublished material for either poster or platform presentation starting January 19, 2018. For more information on the submission process visit the abstracts section of the conference website here.

As noted above you will be required to create an IZFS profile in order to submit an abstract here.

2018 Chi-Bin Chien Award Nominations are now open!

The Chi-Bin Chien Award was established by the zebrafish research community and the International Zebrafish Society (IZFS) in memory of Dr. Chi-Bin Chien (1965–2011). The Award celebrates Chi-Bin’s enthusiasm and love for the discussion of scientific ideas and the good things that grow out of interactions and open discourse among scientists, his efforts to mentor and support the development of young scientists, and the collaborative and generous spirit with which he contributed to advance research with the zebrafish. Click here for more information.

2018 George Streisinger Award Nominations are now open!

The International Zebrafish Society has established the George Streisinger Award for a senior investigator who has made outstanding and continued contributions to the advancement of the zebrafish field. George Streisinger (1927-1984) was the founding father of zebrafish research. The George Streisinger Award recognizes a senior investigator who, like George himself, has done sustained and foundational work that has opened new possibilities within the zebrafish field that benefit all of our research today.
