Job Description

 

-Works under the general supervision of the Facility Manager and carries out the daily activities

of the aquatics facility network at Brigham and Women’s Hospital which include:

-Provide appropriate daily husbandry (feeding, tank exchanges and cleaning) to Zebra fish

and maintenance of the Zebra fish facility (equipment and facility sanitation) at 221

Longwood Ave and the BTM satellite facility


-Performs daily health checks and reports sick fish or high mortality events to veterinary

staff

-Monitors tanks required maintenance and contacts investigators for overdue tasks

-Performs facility cleaning and sanitation tasks

-Monitors facility for known pests and reports findings

-Keep daily records of facility parameters, documentation of breeding and stock

maintenance

-Monitor the water quality and the room environmental parameters and report out-of-range

findings.

-Feeds the zebrafish colony and prepares live for feeding the adult and juvenile fish at both

facilities.

-Uses the large-scale breeding chambers for generating embryos for study.

-Maintains inventory of feed and facilities supplies.

-Performs colony maintenance tasks for facility stock fish.

-Perform routine and non-routine maintenance and repairs at both facilities.

-Performs duties as assigned by the Facility Manager.

-Maintains and understands facilities SOPs and SOP manual.

-Trains new laboratory personnel on the proper use of the zebrafish facility, specialized

research protocols, and proper handling of the zebrafish in the most humane manner and

in compliance with regulatory mandates.

-Conducts independent experiments and assist users with zebrafish husbandry.


Qualifications

BS or BA degree is required

1 year of work experience is preferred but equivalent combination of fish biology or aquatic

husbandry experience will be taken into consideration.


ADDITIONAL SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Must be willing to work weekends

Ability to understand spoken English to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from

supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English

Must have good manual dexterity

Ability to quickly learn new techniques and work independently

Must demonstrate careful attention to detail

Ability to lift 20lbs
