The Department of Biology at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2020, or as negotiated. This position will be a Chair in Neurobiology for five years that may qualify for dedicated funding devoted to research on cannabinoids and carry a reduced teaching load over that time period. We seek candidates who will develop a research program investigating cellular and molecular mechanisms of neural function and development in a model system, preferably zebrafish. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in, and capacity to teach molecular genetics. Examples of research interests include (but are not limited to) Developmental Neurobiology, Behavioural Neuroscience, Cannabinoids, and Endocannabinoid systems.

We welcome applications from candidates who can build research collaborations within and outside of the Department. Research in the Department of Biology spans the range from molecular biology to ecosystems, with existing strengths in zebrafish research and aquaculture. We have a newly renovated aquatic facility housing zebrafish and salmonids and our Microscopy and Microanalysis Facility is equipped with a state-of-the-art confocal microscope optimized for in vivo imaging as well as cutting edge electron microscopes and sample preparation facilities. A recently hired Cannabis Research Chair in the Department of Chemistry offers potential for collaboration, as do neuroscience researchers in our Department of Psychology and other researchers in the Faculties of Kinesiology, Nursing, and Engineering. Atlantic Canada has a well-established aquaculture industry and a developing cannabis industry that offer opportunities for developing synergies for translational research of relevance to the local economy.

The candidate is expected to develop an externally funded research program in neurobiology. Regional opportunities for external funding exist through the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation, the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, with national opportunities available through CIHR, NSERC, MITACS, and other federal funding sources.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and postdoctoral experience. A proven track record in the area of neurobiology is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate a record of, or potential for, excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
