Immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow

An immediate position for a Postdoctoral candidate with extensive expertise in zebrafish husbandry and development, and in molecular and cellular techniques using the zebrafish model, is available in the Yelick Lab.  Significant expertise with genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9, and in creating transgenic zebrafish is preferred.  The successful candidate will study zebrafish models for human mineralized tissue diseases.  Research will be conducted in the Yelick Laboratory, located on the Tufts Medical Campus in Boston, and in the 2,000 tank Tufts Zebrafish Facility located within the Yelick Lab.  The successful candidate will have a recent PhD and relevant publications on research using the zebrafish model, have excellent communication and organizational skills, be highly motivated, dependable, productive and able to work effectively with others.  The selected Postdoc will have the opportunity to oversee the research efforts of graduate and undergraduate students, and technicians, to facilitate his/her research.

Research Positions, Mokalled Lab, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The Neuroscience Program and Department of Physiology at Michigan State University invite applications for a nine-month, tenure track faculty position. We anticipate an appointment at the Assistant Professor level, but highly qualified applicants at Associate or Full Professor levels will also be considered. The ideal applicant’s research will utilize state-of-the-art techniques to study neural networks in health and disease. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research complements existing strengths in the Physiology Department and Neuroscience Program in areas such as the peripheral nervous system, motivated behaviors, pain processing, neuroimmunology, metabolism and sex differences. The Duke University School of Medicine Zebrafish Core Facilities (Z-Core) is a shared resource that offers aquaculture services to nine biomedical research labs using zebrafish as a model organism.  Having gone through several expansions since its inception in 2003, the Duke Z-Core now houses over 12,000 tanks. The facility utilizes seven large multi-rack recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and many small RAS units to house thousands of transgenic and mutant zebrafish strains.  The facility staff provides fish husbandry and RAS maintenance in support of studies at the forefront of tissue regeneration, microbiota interaction, morphogenesis, cellular disease, and immunology research.  The Z-Core’s growth and use of advanced aquaculture equipment creates a unique and growth-oriented environment for professionals looking to advance in aquaculture and aquatic science disciplines.

 

The Z-Core has an immediate opening for a full-time facility technician to be part of a dedicated husbandry staff. Candidates should have at minimum an associate’s degree in a scientific discipline, with a bachelor’s degree preferred.  A general understanding of aquaculture, husbandry, and water chemistry is expected.

 

Work responsibilities include:

1.)  Provide daily fish feedings.

2.)  Record daily water parameters and review for abnormal readings.

3.)  Clean and calibrate water quality probes and system sensors.

4.)  Handle basic needs of the facility during weekends.

5.)  Change system filters.

6.)  Cleaning, maintenance, and organization of tanks and aquaculture components.

7.)  Assist facility management in resolving any problems in facility operation.

8.)  Transfer embryos and provide care to nursery racks.

9.)  Support facility sanitation protocols.

10.)  Assist in decapsulation of Artemia cyst and maintain cultures.

11.)  Check fish health daily.

12.)  Assist facility researchers when needed.

13.)  Participate in bi-weekly staff meetings.

14.)  Contribute ideas on facility improvements regarding equipment, procedures, and techniques.

 

Other duties may be required as necessary.   Training will be provided as needed.  Work on weekends and an occasional holiday is required.

 

Working conditions:

The facility technician will be on his/her feet a majority of the time and will periodically need to lift items up to 50lbs.  Work will be performed in or around wet conditions that require extra caution.  Work may result in occasional exposure to malodorous smells, chemicals, and fish and bacterial waste.

 

Start date: As soon as possible.

Bioinformatician - MSU

Several faculty in the Department of Integrative Biology at Michigan State University are looking to collectively hire a highly motivated bioinformatician/computational scientist with a biology background for a full time position. Typical research projects will use RNA-sequencing, RAD-sequencing, whole genome sequencing and assembly, and targeted capture sequencing to address questions in ecology, evolution, comparative genomics, and developmental biology. We are looking for an enthusiastic and organized individual to join our team, who is skilled at working for multiple people and on different projects. The position will be based in East Lansing, MI on the MSU campus and comes with a competitive benefits package.

 

Primary duties will include:

1.     Curating sequence data (10%)

2.     Analyzing sequence data (65%)

3.     Producing tables and figures and writing data analysis methods and results (10%)

4.     Mentoring students on bioinformatics methods (10%)

5.     Reading scientific literature to stay up to date on newest analysis methods (5%)

 

Required Qualifications:

The job requires knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree in bioinformatics or related field and up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive bioinformatics experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The candidate should be well-versed in unix/linux, as well as at least one other programming language (e.g. R, python, perl). Applicants should have extensive experience analyzing large ‘–omic’ datasets.

 

Desired Qualifications:

A Master’s or PhD degree in bioinformatics or related field. Experience in at least some of the following key areas:

1.     Analyzing complex RNA-seq experimental data sets for differential gene expression

2.     Analyzing RAD-seq datasets—aligning to reference and creating de novo assemblies, SNP discovery, genotyping, etc.

3.     Genome assembly and annotation

4.   Genome comparisons

5.   Phylogenomics

6.   Epigenomics

A fellowship to develop zebrafish assays to model Neurodegenerative and Neuromuscular disorders is available in the Neurobiology Lab, Department of Developmental Neuroscience, at IRCCS Fondazione Stella Maris, in Pisa.

Candidates must have experience with zebrafish microinjections, along with associated imaging and behaviour techniques. To fulfil the position applicants must have obtained a doctorate in biology or biotechnology and at least one peer reviewed article as first author. Residence in Italy is required.

The Cells-in-Motion-Interfaculty-Centre – CiMIC at the University of Münster offers 

CiM Gerty-Cori Junior Groups 

with tenure-track option in the fields of 

Biomimetic Systems, Immune Cell Plasticity, Machine Learning, Metabolomics, Quantitative Cell Biology, Synthetic Biology, Vascular Heterogeneity 

 

The junior groups will be associated with CiMIC, an interfaculty structure of the Cells-in Motion Cluster of Excellence involving Medicine, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Sciences, Chemistry, Pharmacy and Biology. CiMIC aims at understanding cellular behaviour at various levels using imaging as a central strategy. 

The junior groups will be a 5+2-year appointment with the option of entry into a tenure-track professorial system. Tenure and promotion will be based on evaluation by CiMIC and the involved faculties. Positions will be supplemented by scientific and technical staff positions and required equipment. 

The Gerty-Cori Junior Groups should have an impact on gender equality in the participating disciplines. Consequently, we actively encourage applications by women.
