Research Assistant - UNC-Chapel Hill

Position Summary:

The Shiau laboratory is seeking applicants for a full-time Research Technician position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Our lab uses the zebrafish model system to study the function and development of macrophages and microglia with special emphases on neuroimmune interactions and control of inflammation.  We encourage highly-motivated, science-driven, and diligent individuals to apply. 

 

Duties:

Management of multiple projects, and analysis and generation of genetic mutants to dissect new pathways in the development of immune and nervous systems. This is a research-focused technical position where the individual must be highly-motivated to do research, and have a strong skillset for careful and meticulous lab tasks, analytical abilities, organizational skills to track and work on different projects and tasks in parallel, and able to work well with zebrafish for husbandry and experimental purposes. The individual will use a wide-range of advanced biological techniques, including genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, confocal imaging, and embryology to address active areas of research in the laboratory. The ability of the individual to work well with others and be effective in training others is also important.

 

Required and preferred qualifications:

Individual with a BS degree or higher in Biology, or related field. It is essential that the applicant have previous research experience(s), working knowledge and experience with basic molecular biology techniques (including PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, and genotyping), computer skills, strong analytical and communication skills (both oral and written), highly organized, meticulous in nature, and have a strong motivation to pursue scientific research as a career track, including graduate school in biological sciences in the near future. Previous experience with zebrafish is not required (training will be provided), and a possible commitment of a 2-year employment is preferred.
