Research Associate - University of Cambridge Department of Haematology

Salary: £28,982-£37,768

Closing date: 20/10/16

Applications are invited for a highly motivated Research Associate to join Dr Ana Cvejic's research group at the University of Cambridge, Department of Haematology:

Blood stem cells need to both perpetuate (self-renew) themselves and differentiate into all mature blood cells to maintain blood formation throughout life. However, it is unclear how the underlying gene regulatory network maintains this population of self-renewing and differentiating stem cells, and how it accommodates the transition from a stem cell to a mature blood cell. Clarifying how HSCs differentiate into diverse cell types is important for understanding how this process is subverted in the generation of blood pathologies.

Dr Ana Cvejic's group aims to bridge this knowledge gap by providing a method in a relevant model organism (zebrafish, Danio rerio) to dissect the role of novel blood genes and to determine their hierarchical position in regulatory networks that underlie haematopoiesis. The work will involve a number of molecular biology techniques, in particular single cell transcriptomics and cell biology techniques. The roleholder will be involved in the development of inflammation/infection models in zebrafish and will study how the inflammatory signals influence the pace and direction of HSC differentiation.

The roleholder will have significant experience in molecular and cell biology. They will be able to demonstrate independent, critical thinking, will be hard working, passionate about science, and keen to learn and improve skills in an outstanding research environment. Knowledge or interest in the field of haematology and inflammation would be highly advantageous.
