About the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute
The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is Australia's oldest medical research institute, and celebrated
its centenary in 2015. For 100 years we have been making discoveries for humanity, improving
the health of people in Australia and around the world.
The institute has more than 750 researchers and students who are working to understand, prevent
and treat disease, with a focus on cancers, immune disorders and infectious diseases. Diseases
we research include blood, breast, bowel, lung and ovarian cancers, diabetes, arthritis, coeliac
disease, lupus and malaria. About 100 national and international clinical trials currently underway
originate from research at the institute.
About the position
The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute's Centre for Dynamic Imaging (CDI) aims to provide access to
cutting edge microscopy services and expertise from across multiple disciplines as well as an
education program to train our next generation of researchers, so we can foster innovation in
biological imaging. Investment in the strategy will profoundly improve researchers’ abilities to
dissect key questions in human disease research.
It will also give researchers the opportunity to push the boundaries of optical imaging, using
technology that is rapidly advancing. This comprehensive and advanced microscopy platform
promises to underpin the development of better treatments for a broad range of diseases by
illuminating the molecular and cellular dynamics of disease.
An opportunity exists for a senior scientist to head the CDI and will involve developing and leading
a research team conducting significant and innovative quantitative microscopy research programs.
Specific goals will include expectations for peer-reviewed publication, research fundraising
(through both government and private philanthropy) and intellectual property development.
The appointee will have demonstrated capacity for group leadership, outstanding performance at
Senior Research Officer or Senior Research Fellow level and a record of high quality publication
and achievement of a body of research. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to gain
cooperation and influence others in achieving scientific goals and building collaboration is also
required.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing leadership and overseeing the
operations of the CDI team to provide a high quality and timely imaging platform as well as
ensuring high levels of service and collaboration are developed and tailored to the needs of the
Institute’s imaging community.
Terms of appointment
This position is available for 7 years, renewable. The institute aims to provide laboratory heads
with the opportunity to succeed within the first seven years of employment. We will provide a
package that includes financial support for salaries and consumables, professional development
and collaborations. Salary range is Academic Level C3 $123,315 - C6 $133.986. Up to 17%
superannuation and attractive salary packaging options are available.
