Position Summary: Reports to the Principal Investigator, the successful candidate is a highly motivated individual who will work in a productive molecular biology laboratory using the zebrafish model to study human leukemia, blood cell development and solid tumors.

Our laboratory uses the zebrafish model to study hematopoiesis and myeloid disease. We are the first group to identify mast cell counterparts in the zebrafish and study their function in immune disease and cancer. We have employed transgenic and CRISPR-based technology to model a number of bone marrow failure syndromes and human leukemias in zebrafish to provide insights into underlying disease pathogenesis and as in vivo preclinical screening tools for novel drug discovery. We are also pioneers in the xenotransplantation of human leukemia and solid tumors into zebrafish embryos as a platform for studying tumor-microenvironment interactions with robust readouts for proliferation and migration in vivo. Our state-of-the art molecular biology laboratory is adjacent to the recently constructed Dalhousie Zebrafish Core Facility with housing for 60,000 adult zebrafish on two recirculating systems. Between the core facility and our laboratory, we have 4 microinjection stations, an imaging suite, and a tissue culture room. A Lightsheet microscope and embryo biosorter will be arriving in the next few months as part of a recent Canadian Foundation for Innovation infrastructure award. Projects have a clinical-translational focus and involve local, national and international collaborators. Our affiliations with the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology and Pathology at Dalhousie University, as well as with the Zebrafish Disease Modeling Society, American Society of Hematology, and Children’s Oncology Group provide rich opportunities for scientific development and interaction.
