Research Assistant in Fish Heart Regeneration

Fixed term post on Grade 6: £27,328 to £32,600 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to join Professor Mathilda Mommersteeg’s laboratory to work on an exciting project focussed on identifying the mechanisms underlying fish heart regeneration using both Mexican cavefish and zebrafish. The post would be ideally suited to a research assistant with practical experience in the generation and analysis of in vivo fish models of development and/or disease, preferably cardiovascular.

You will be specifically charged with the generation and analysis of new transgenic fish lines. The main techniques used will include the generation of constructs for injection to generate transgenic zebrafish and Astyanax mexicanus lines using CRISPR and other methods, egg injections, fish cardiac injury surgery, qRT-PCR,  immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridisation.

You must hold, or be near completion of, a Masters (or equivalent) in Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences or a related science and have recent practical experience of working with in vivo fish models of development and/or disease. You must have a high level of technical competence and experience in the generation of transgenic fish lines, including the generation of constructs and injections. You are an enthusiastic and organised self-starter with the ability to work unsupervised on a day-to-day basis.

You will be based in the Sherrington Building in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford.

The position is funded by the British Heart Foundation for up to 3 years.

The closing date for applications is noon on Monday, 18th April 2016.

Interviews are likely to be held the week beginning 25th April 2016.
