 Description of Position:

Working under general supervision, the zebrafish facility technician will be responsible for many aspects of the zebrafish facility’s upkeep. This position will be responsible for day-to-day operations and maintenance, husbandry and record keeping, training of facility users, facility billing and contributing to research projects for the users of the facility. This is a full-time position. Candidates must be able to respond to zebrafish facility emergencies and be willing to work some weekends and holidays.

Education: Bachelor's degree required.

Previous experience working with zebrafish is a plus.

 

The Zebrafish Facility Technician will be expected to:

1. Demonstrate compassion for and dedication to the care and use of zebrafish in the facility.

2. Conduct basic operations of the zebrafish facility (including stock and maintain equipment, maintain fish database and common stock lines, troubleshoot, billing, feeding & cleaning, etc.).

·       Follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. When needed, assist in developing facility procedures.

·       Work in the zebrafish facility: standing for long hours, lifting fish tanks, scrubbing floors/counters/etc, changing filters, fixing leaks, etc.

·       Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and utilize protective gear to protect the health the animals.

·       Organize the weekend and holiday feeding schedules

·       Demonstrate effective problem-solving skills and sound judgment.

·       Display strong organization skills; ability to multi-task and prioritize. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through. Must be self-motivated.

·       Effectively relay information to others.

3. Train others in facility use and standard operating procedures.

4. Maintain effective working relationships and address the potential and current needs of customers. Coordinate and assist with animal husbandry related to research projects upon request.

5. Perform other techniques such as genotyping, microscopy, and animal-related work, etc.
