Applications are invited from post-doctoral researchers for a role contributing to the development of a programme of high quality research, including determination of specific research proposals and objectives as laid out in the SMA Trust UK Research Consortium proposal that funds this position. 

The successful candidate will conduct original research and produce material for publication in leading international research journal and dissemination. A PhD in Neuroscience or a closely related field is required, along with expertise in working with animal models of neurodegeneration and in morphological and molecular techniques.

This post is a fixed-term position for three years.

Job Purpose

To contribute to the development of a programme of high quality research, including determination of specific research proposals and objectives as laid out in the SMA Trust UK Research Consortium proposal that funds this position. Conduct original research and produce material for publication in leading international research journal and dissemination.

Main Responsibilities

1. Conduct and facilitate a SMA Trust-funded programme of individual research in the area of therapy development for the childhood motor neuron disease, spinal muscular atrophy. Responsibility for delivering core elements of the research programme as laid out in the SMA Trust-funded award.
(Approx. 60% of time)

2. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records to document the research progress. Take a lead role in writing up data for publication. Present data at group meetings, section meetings, and conferences to make data available for other workers. Regular reporting of progress to the PI/other members of the research team is expected. Presentation of research findings at national and international level.
(Approx. 10% of time)

3. Contribute to the dissemination and publication of own/research team’s research findings.
(Approx. 10% of time)

4. To prepare research proposals and applications to external funding bodies based on a line of future research.
(Approx. 2% of time)

5. To continually update knowledge and understanding in the field of neuromuscular/neurodegenerative disease research, and update skill base accordingly within this research area
(Approx. 10% of time)

6. To provide guidance and supervision for student projects and/or instruction of students in the use of equipment/demonstration of techniques 
(Approx. 8% of time)
