Killifish Aquaculture Technician - Stanford University

The department of Genetics at Stanford university is looking for a reliable, organized, and motivated full-time fish technician/laboratory assistant to help with ongoing  aging research using a the African turquoise killifish as a model system. Prior experience with fish is highly preferred. Good communication skills are required, as well as ability to function in a multidisciplinary research environment. 

 

Duties include:

- Maintain various strains of fish

- Maintain the Aquatic Housing Systems, including checking water parameters, regular feeding, sterilize fish tanks etc.’

-  Recognize and report signs of illness or behavioral abnormalities

-  Take fish census and record information, such as deaths.

-  Maintain accurate and compete records on fish inventory and breeding

-  Treat animal under the direction of a post-doctoral fellow

-  Set-up breeding tanks and collect fish eggs, and hatch new embryos of fish

-  Perform complex lab procedures such as genotyping.

-  Perform complex lab procedures such as injecting DNA and RNA into fertilized eggs (fish transgenesis).

-  Organize the fish room.

-  Feeding the fish during the weekend – twice a month.

 

Qualifications:

-  At least two years of animal care experience in a research or animal laboratory

-  Experience working with fish is high desired

-  Demonstrated habits of cleanliness and neatness

-  Ability to keep detailed records pertaining to animal census and water parameter

-  Ability to follow oral and written instruction in English

-  Understanding the techniques required to care for fish

-  Ability to operate a variety of equipment, such as sterilizing equipment

-  Ability to lift and move a minimum of 30 pounds

-  Ability to work in a pathogen-free environment using established procedures

-  Computer experience in order to maintain breeding records and other documents preferred
