Animal (Zebra fish) Care Associate I, Vivarium Operations

 

This role is responsible for supporting NIBR-Cambridge discovery research by ensuring high quality Zebra fish care/husbandry, colony management and compliance with regulatory standards within an AAALAC International accredited research program. This position will require a strong ability to self-motivate, actively communicate and successfully work both within and across teams. 

•50% provide appropriate daily husbandry (feeding, health evaluations/Tank exchanges) to Zebra fish and maintenance of the Zebra fish facilities (equipment and facility sanitation).
•25% perform colony management as related to breeding fish colonies, including mating, egg sorting, biopsy collection, record keeping and identifying transgenic or mutant fish.
•15% maintain water quality and filtration systems.
•10% ensure compliance with all institutional and regulatory protocols, policies, and guidelines.
•Performs other duties as may be required.

 

Education: 
•Knowledge: Understanding and comprehension of facts, techniques, nomenclature, theories, etc. as they relate specifically to job performance.
•2-year degree in Veterinary Technology, 4-year Science degree, or an equivalent combination of experience along with higher education desirable but not required. 
•Working knowledge of federal, state, local (Animal Welfare) laws, Departmental SOP’s and Good Laboratory Practices.
•Good communication skills to ensure close cooperation with laboratory personnel required.
•AALAS Technician Certification ALAT desirable, required within one (1) year of start

Languages: 
•English

Experience: 
•Some experience (0 – 3 years) working with animals or performing daily husbandry tasks is highly desirable.

The qualified candidate will have strong interpersonal & communication skills, a strong commitment to providing quality research support, and dedicated to providing humane animal care in accordance with all regulations pertaining to Laboratory Animal Care. Candidate must be reliable, independent, able to work well in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment, and demonstrate a focus to attention to detail in providing quality and consistent results in the execution of all duties. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, move heavy objects, work from a standing position for prolonged time periods and perform repetitive motion tasks. Must be able to work weekends as part of standard schedule.
