Advanced Zebrafish Technician - Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, Lisboa

Full time position open for an Advanced Zebrafish Technician who will be integrated in the Fish Platform and carry out advanced scientific and technical work related to the care and management of zebrafish used for neuroscience and cancer research.
Candidates should have experience working in a research zebrafish facility, carrying out routine husbandry and care activities. Preference will be given to science-driven, highly motivated candidates with experience in developing research projects, using state-of-the-art technologies and a strong desire for constant learning and innovation.

Candidates will be working in the context of the Champalimaud Foundation, as part of an international team in a new research institute on the Lisbon waterfront.

Duration:
The fellowship will have the duration of 6 months, with the possibility of renewal, in exclusiveness regime, as regulated by Lei n.º 40/2004, of 18th of August, and of the fellowship regulations of the Champalimaud Foundation.

Subject of activities:
The Zebrafish Technician will join the Fish Platform team, participating in all activities of the fish facility as well as advanced services provided to users by the Platform. Major tasks will include:
• Maintenance of life support systems, fish husbandry and water quality;
• Maintenance of live feed cultures;
• Maintenance and characterization of different types of zebrafish lines (mutants, transgenics);
• Carry out zebrafish crosses as per researchers’ requests;
• Identify mutant or transgenic carriers by crossing and phenotypic scoring of resulting larvae;
• Perform microinjection of DNA constructs into zebrafish embryos to establish stable transgenic lines;
• Develop and implement techniques for cryopreservation of zebrafish sperm and in vitro fertilization;
• Conduct other related research experiments/services and assist in the training of others.

Candidates Eligibility:
• A degree in a biological sciences field, preferably a Master’s degree.
• Excellent and effective communication skills and strong team spirit, essential for a fruitful interaction with both colleagues and researchers
• Very good English skills

The following qualifications are also desirable:
• Extensive knowledge of basic genetics;
• Acquaintance with the Gal4-UAS trans-activation system;
• Familiarity with new gene-editing technologies such as CRISPR
