The Vesalius Research Center (VRC) is one of the research departments of the Vlaams Instituut Biotechnologie (VIB) located at KU Leuven – Campus Gasthuisberg.  Within the VRC we have actually 8 research groups with an employment of about 170 researchers, administrative and technical collaborators.

 

The Laboratory of Endothelial Molecular Biology is looking for an enthusiastic laboratory technician (m/f) handling its Zebrafish Facility.

 

The Lab is specifically interested to study new molecular, cellular and genetic pathways involved in angiogenesis using the zebrafish model.

 

Key responsabilities

1. Provide routine animal care and husbandry including feeding, water exchanges, tank cleaning, and health monitoring.

2. Assist in developing and modifying animal care policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and practices which promote high quality, cost effective operation of the animal facility.


3. Interact with faculty, staff, and other departments to provide high quality, responsive animal care services.

4. Work with efficiency and effectiveness in regard to assigned tasks.


5. Monitor supply and equipment inventory to sustain day-to-day operations.


6. Maintain accurate records including: room logs, health reports, animal census, and other records as required.


7. Assist in maintaining colonies to meet researcher needs, including rearing stocks.


8. Prepare for all regulatory inspections including, but not limited to, IACUC and AAALAC.


9. Have the opportunity to learn state-of-the art genetic techniques in zebrafish such as transgenesis, Cre/lox technology, CRISPR/TALEN technology, confocal and SPIM microscopy

10. Be involved in a set of innovative research projects

 

The successful candidate will be self-motivated, have excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work closely with other team members. Prior experience with fish is preferred.

 

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in any of the life sciences (e.g., animal science, biology, microbiology, aquaculture). Basic computer skills and a working knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word are required.
