Overview:
GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The fellow will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator, Prof Alvaro Viljoen in the Phytomedicine Research Programme. The research unit is establishing a small (40 tank) Zebrafish unit to explore the bioactivity of traditional medicines and will include toxicity studies.
Responsibilities:
• Assist in establishing the Zebrafish facility
• Establish relevant bioassays
• Interpret data, form conclusions, and decide on and plan follow-up experiments to be done with a high degree of independence
• Compile and analyse data and perform computations using image analysis software, spreadsheets, graphing, etc
• Assist in writing the text of scientific publications and grants
• Train new laboratory personnel, students and collaborators
• Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment
• Perform other duties as required
Qualifications / Experience:
• A PhD in Biological or Pharmaceutical Sciences, or equivalent experience
• Knowledge of the Microsoft Office software package
• Strong ability to analyse complex visual data in a quantitative and objective manner
• Judgment and action skills required to solve commonly encountered problems
PREFERRED EXPERTISE:
1. Experience with zebrafish husbandry and aquaculture techniques
2. Knowledge of natural product research will be an added advantage
