The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology is one of UC Berkeley’s largest academic departments and is by several measures (including number of the faculty and students, budget, and assigned square feet), larger than many UCB colleges and schools. MCB is divided into five divisions: Neurobiology; Genetics, Genomics & Development; Cell & Developmental Biology; Immunology & Pathogenesis; Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. 

The SRA II will support the research of the laboratory by overseeing and managing the zebrafish colony, an important university resource, shared by multiple investigators. For 3-4 days per week, the employee is responsible for overseeing the raising of zebrafish at all developmental stages (egg to reproductive adult), evaluating and prioritizing the work of facility staff, placing and receiving all orders for the facility, interfacing and communicating with all parties connected with the facility (PIs, lab manager, laboratory members, facility staff, OLAC staff, ACUC inspectors etc), preparing facility for semi-annual inspections and triennial accreditation inspections, and ensuring general upkeep and maintenance of the facility, including performing specialized tasks and repairs. In addition, the employee will interview, train, and supervise facility staff members and work-study students; for the latter, the employee will do all the hiring independently, without supervision. Additionally, the employee will be responsible for breeding and maintaining wildtype stocks. Finally, the employee will train lab members on how to safely safely perform general fish facility feeding and maintenance tasks. 
 

Responsibilities:
 
• Prepare fish food and feed fish; record keeping associated with husbandry as well as assisting in daily husbandry tasks as required. 

• Perform specialized system maintenance (Clean and calibrate conductivity and pH probes; disassemble UV sterilization system and perform repairs and/or replace UV bulbs; undertake major system repairs (e.g. pump replacement, leak repair). Arranging and overseeing repairs. 

• Writing, updating, and revising standard operating procedures, and daily checklists 

• Facility ordering, including communications with vendors and the purchasing department. Maintain inventory and track spending. 

• Interviewing and training facility staff. Evaluating staff performance, giving feedback, and prioritizing their work. 

• Communications with those that interface with the facility (PIs, laboratory members, OLAC, ACUC), including correspondence regarding protocols, inspections, vacation/sick-leave requests and accommodations, tank requests, and special information including training. One-on-one training of new laboratory members on facility protocols. 

• Production and maintenance of wild type lines and stocking of MEPS units. Other duties as required. 


Qualifications:

• Must have sufficient education or experience to be trained in the duties of the position 
• Must be extremely reliable and responsible 
• Must be able to prioritize and fairly evaluate the work of others, give timely feedback, and monitor response 
• Must be able to interface effectively with university colleagues at many levels, from principal investigators to OLAC veterinarians and staff to facility users (students and postdocs). 
• Ability to follow directions, pay attention to detail, and keep careful records 
• Once trained, must be able to work independently to perform required tasks and to recognize operational problems, report them when relevant, and undertake or arrange required repairs 
• Ability to handle the physical requirements of the job (e.g., repetitive motions, lifting 10-liter tanks of water, 40 lbs of salt extending periods of standing and walking) 
• Enjoy working with animals 
• Must be able to work on 3-4days per week and be available by phone should problems arise. 
• Must be willing to work outside of normal hours/days when circumstances require the fish facility manager (e.g., consultation on emergency repair work, dealing with non-routine issues with facility staff, sending emergency or important notifications to all users, special request for assistance from PIs, lab manager, or facility users). 
• Must be able to work occasional holidays 
• High school diploma required 
• Some college coursework, particularly in the biological sciences (preferred)
• Previous work experience with animals or in an aquatic animal facility (preferred)
• Ability to work frequent holidays or to cover for others on vacation (preferred)
• Familiarity with Aquatic Ecosystems equipment (preferred)
• Familiarity with MEPS systems is prefered, as are familiarity with large scale breeding programs and in vitro fertilization (preferred)
