Research Technician - University of Sheffield, UK

This post of Research Assistant within the Department of Infection and Immunity and The Bateson Centre has arisen as a result of the award of a Wellcome Trust/Royal Society Sir Henry Dale Fellowship to Dr Philip Elks and is central to a programme of work on the regulation of the innate immune response to pathogenic challenge. Dr Elks heads one of three zebrafish (Danio rerio) research groups interested in host-pathogen interaction as part of a vibrant zebrafish community in The Bateson Centre.

The successful applicant will have a central role in completing a programme of research that combines live cell microscopy with molecular and genetic techniques to understand the roles of hypoxia signalling in the host immune response to bacterial challenge. This research will predominantly be carried out in vivo using a zebrafish model of Tuberculosis (TB). You will have responsibility for enabling and supporting the broader research aims of the laboratory.

A degree in a biological or biomedical science is essential as is previous research experience either as part of an undergraduate degree or subsequent to graduation. Experience of microbiology or molecular biology and live imaging techniques are highly desirable and previous experience using a model organism (or equivalent experience) is essential. You must be highly organised and the post would include some laboratory management duties alongside a research role. An ability to supervise colleagues and work independently will be important. This post will be for a fixed term of 5 years.

The post is available from 1st June 2015, until 31st May 2020.
