The University of Queensland Biological Resources Unit (UQBR) manages the laboratory animal production and research facilities for the University of Queensland.

The role of UQBR is to provide UQ with world class Animal Research services within a best practice ethical framework.

We are currently advertising for a Senior Aquatic Technical Officer (HEW5) within UQ Biological Resources Aquatic Facilities based at St Lucia Campus, in Brisbane

The role

The primary purpose of this role is the care and maintenance of laboratory teaching and research animals within the University of Queensland Biological Resources Aquatic Facilities. This position involves significant administration and supervisory activities to support the management of the facility. The appointee will provide high quality operations and husbandry skills and be responsible for assisting the Aquatics Manager with the daily operational requirements associated with maintaining multiple recirculating aquarium systems and ensuring optimal animal health and productivity is sustained.

Medical Clearance: Working with laboratory animals is an inherent requirement of the position. Your appointment is therefore subject to, and conditional upon, satisfactory medical clearance(s), including disclosure of relevant medical history, to undertake such work without unreasonable risk to your health and safety. In addition, the Employee is required to fully comply with necessary ongoing health monitoring procedures and control measures associated with the position.
The person

Applicants must possess significant practical experience in the operational aspects of Recirculating Aquarium Systems (RAS) Aquaculture and/or considerable experience in producing and using animals in the research environment. Relevant qualifications are essential, with diplomatic finesse and a strong desire to develop a successful and productive career in performance driven aquaculture are an asset. Experience in staff supervision, Animal house administration and the care of genetically modified animals, good general research skills, excellent analytical and writing skills, and the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research teams would be well regarded.
Remuneration

This is a full-time, 3 year fixed term appointment at HEW Level 5. The remuneration package will be in the range $58,822.03 - $65,880.13 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $68,821.78 - $77,079.75 p.a.).
