As part of a multi-year faculty hiring initiative to grow the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia, we announce two immediate openings for tenure track Assistant Professors who will contribute to either or both of the following research areas:

1) Neurobiology and Behavior. This theme aims at mechanisms governing the formation, function and repair of neuronal circuits using genetics, imaging or electrophysiology. We encourage applications from scientists who can build on the Department’s and University’s strengths in developmental neurobiology, sensory biology, biological clocks, neuronal or glial cell biology, neurogenomics and diseases of the nervous system.

2) Stem Cell Biology. This theme focuses on molecular mechanisms that govern pluripotency and differentiation of cells during development, regeneration or oncogenesis. Preferred candidates will strengthen and interconnect the Department’s and University’s expertise in epigenetics/genomics, cell biology, developmental biology and morphogenesis.

We are interested in applicants who bring technologies that create synergies among disciplines. Successful candidates are expected to establish a vigorous, independent, externally-funded research program, and contribute excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. We are studying the synaptic processing of visual information in the retina using multiphoton microscopy and electrophysiology.   We have recently developed fluorescent reporter proteins for monitoring calcium influx and vesicle fusion in synaptic terminals and are using these to monitor synaptic activity in large populations of neurons within the retina of zebrafish (Dreosti et al., 2009, Nature Methods, 6, 883-889; Dreosti et al., 2011, Nature Neuroscience 14, 951-952).  Our overall aim is to understand how neurons and synapses in the inner retina contribute to the processing of information contained within a visual stimulus.

The position is in the laboratory of Leon Lagnado in the Neurobiology Division at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge (www.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk).  We will move into a new state-of-the-art building in 2012.  We work collaboratively, and projects involve a combination of electrophysiology, multiphoton microscopy and molecular biology. Experience in at least two of these techniques would be required, together with the desire to learn the other. Previous experience with zebrafish would be a distinct advantage.  Funding is available for two years in the forst instance, with the possibility of extension. Applications should be submitted electronically in the form of a single PDF file including a cover letter / statement of interest, a CV and the contact details of two referees.  Address: LL1@mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk.  Informal enquiries are welcome.

An opportunity is available for an enthusiastic and collaborative scientist to join a research group studying the function of neurons and synapses in the visual system of zebrafish.  The successful candidate will assist the Programme Leader, Dr. Leon Lagnado, on a research project involving transgenic zebrafish expressing fluorescent reporter proteins. The candidate will have a solid knowledge in basic molecular techniques and be a good team worker, willing to contribute to the daily running of the research group and management of the aquatics facility.  The role will require care and attention to detail, as well as a proactive and friendly approach.  Experience in molecular biology is essential and previous experience in zebrafish genetics highly desirable.

This is a limited term contract for two years in the first instance, but with the possibility of extension as the role develops.

Applications should be submitted electronically in the form of a single PDF file including a cover letter / statement of interest, a CV and the contact details of two referees.  Address: LL1@mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk.
